SEAT BELTS
To keep our drivers and passengers safe, Maine requires seat belts for all ages, with special rules for children.
DISTRACTED DRIVING
Maine law prohibits the use of mobile phones and handheld electronic devices while operating the vehicle, you may use devices in hands-free modes; there could be a fine of up to $250.
SMOKING
Bangor was the first city in the U.S. to ban smoking in vehicles carrying passengers under the age of 18. Most public places, including all restaurants and bars, are also smoke-free.
ALCOHOL
You should know that:
- Legal drinking age in Maine is 21; identification is required.
- Hours of legal service are 6 AM to 1 AM.
- Maine has a strict OUI policy that makes it a crime to operate a motor vehicle if your blood alcohol level is 0.08 or higher.
BORDER CROSSING
Passport regulations that were effective in June 2009 now require visitors crossing the U.S./Canadian border by land to have either a valid passport card or regular passport. If traveling by air or sea, visitors must possess a valid passport—the passport card is not valid for this type of travel.
